Our second favorite oil: Raw, Organic, Unrefined Coconut Oil
If you've read any of our literature you'll know that our favorite oils are Omega-3 Fatty acids, or Essential Fatty Acids. They are a powerhouse of health for dogs, cats and humans. To read more about them on our website, go to the 'news and articles' page. We hope you add them to your companions’ food at meal time daily. Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA's), also known as medium-chain tryglycerides (MFT's) have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that may prevent infection and disease - what a fighting combo! And, these fatty acids are derived from, you guessed it, virgin unrefined coconut oil. Unrefined coconut oil has been known to help with many health issues when taken internally, including improving digestion and nutrient absorption, relieving arthritis, treating viral, yeast and fungal infections, balancing metabolism and hormones, reducing allergic reactions, promoting normal thyroid function and more. Used topically, it can disinfect cuts, promote wound healing, improve skin and hair condition and clear up other unhealthy growths. What do I buy, and how do I use it? Please be careful to only buy unrefined coconut oils. Refined oils do not have the same beneficial properties and are usually produced from inferior ingredients. Hydrogenated oils contain harmful trans-fats. We prefer raw, unrefined virgin coconut oils. You will find them at your health food store. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but melts quickly at about 90 degrees. Incidentally, it is an excellent oil to use with high heat cooking, as it does not break down into trans-fats as poly- or mono-unsaturated fats do when heated. Starting gradually, work up to feeding 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight per day. Monitor your companion’s skin, coat, breath, body odor and energy. Topically, you can apply the oil directly to cuts, insect bites, lesions, wounds and infected ears. |
