Salmonella is a family of bacteria widely prevalent in the environment. It may be found in water, soil, in the intestinal tract and on the skin of humans, animals and birds. Of the animals we eat, poultry has the highest prevalence of salmonella.
Salmonella is present in all poultry. This is why it is so important to follow safe handling guidelines.* Some strains of salmonella are harmless to humans. Other strains, in small quantities, are not harmful to generally healthy people. Dogs and cats have a much higher resistance to salmonella due to their short, acidic digestive tracts.
We are very pleased to tell you that our family-raised, natural, free-range and antibiotic-free turkey is five times lower in salmonella prevalence than the national standard, and four times lower than the USDA accepted prevalence for processed poultry. This is achieved with a more healthy diet, including probiotics to reduce the presence of salmonella in the digestive tract, and proper handling. Our turkeys are entirely grain-fed and slowly hand processed; a cleaner, more careful and safe method allowing exacting standards with each bird.
